The Peterborough Pop Ensemble first began in the spring of 2000 under the name The Peterborough Singers Pop Ensemble.   The group was created to perform a few popular songs at the Valentine’s Concert for our local award-winning chorus The Peterborough Singers.  Barbara Monahan was asked to direct because of her love of “pop” music, and her ability to create a casual, relaxed performance atmosphere.

With Barb at the piano, watching the ensemble perform was like being invited into their living room to enjoy an intimate concert.  The audience’s response was so enthusiastic that the members of this small group decided to keep the group together.   Several performance opportunities followed in the fall and, as they  say, the rest is history.

Recently the Pop Ensemble made the decision to forge ahead on their own and officially became the Peterborough Pop Ensemble as of January 1, 2009.  Their relationship with The Peterborough Singers remains strong and supportive. Many of the members of the Pop Ensemble continue to perform with the Singers. The Peterborough Pop Ensemble is looking forward to an exciting future!

As with all groups, many talented vocalists have come and gone through the years, and throughout the changes the Pop Ensemble has maintained its high quality of musical excellence.  Many members of the group have classical vocal training, and all are skilled musicians.  The group loves all styles of music, but tends to prefer the rich harmonies of vocal jazz, the challenge of great a cappella music, and inspirational spirituals.

Today the ensemble performs concerts throughout the Peterborough area, supports local charities, and celebrates making beautiful music together. The list below is just a sampling of the exciting performance opportunities the   group has shared.
