Barbara Monahan

pop-goldframe-02Barbara’s love of music led her to pursue a career in Music Education. After receiving her degrees from The University of Western Ontario (Honours Bachelor of Music, 1983) and The University of Toronto (Bachelor of Education, 1984), she began her 26 year teaching career at Kenner Collegiate in Peterborough, Ontario.  Barbara was also organist and choir director at Grace United Church in Peterborough for 18 years.

Barbara has been performing and song writing for over 25 years.  Her music is varied in style and is appealing to both young and old.  Her CD release “A Singer’s Prayer” (2002) is a faith journey through song.  Barbara was thrilled to have members  of the Pop Ensemble join her in the recording studio.

In 2006 she was commissioned by the Peterborough Children’s chorus to compose a mixed treble voice piece.  Instead of one song, she composed two for the chorus.  “Gloria! Christmas Day” and “Child of The World” were debuted at the P.C.C. concerts in December 2006 and April 2007.  Choral composition and arranging has become one of Barbara’s  newest musical interests and she has been arranging songs for the ensemble, most notably  O Canada and The Star-Spangled Banner, which the group performs on a regular basis.  She also has enjoyed several opportunities for solo work within the Peterborough Singers, a community choir to which she has belonged since 1999.

In 2012 Barbara received two distinguished honours:  her induction into the Pathway of Fame (City of Peterborough) and the Hall of Honour (Kenner Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Class of 1979).

Barbara has been the director of The Peterborough Pop Ensemble since its inception in 2000.
